It belongs to the Neve 80 series, the family of consoles built by Neve Electronics between 1968 and 1979 whose modules — above all the 1073 — still define “vintage” for many engineers.

Rupert Neve and the birth of a sound

Rupert Neve founded his company in 1961 and built his first consoles by hand for British studios and broadcasters. His designs used discrete, class-A amplifier stages and transformers at inputs and outputs, an approach that produced low noise, big headroom and a characteristic harmonic richness when pushed. Neve later founded Focusrite (1985) and, in 2005, Rupert Neve Designs; he died in February 2021, aged 94, in Wimberley, Texas.

The 1073 and the A88

In 1970, Neve designed the 1073 module for the A88 console commissioned by Wessex Studios in London. The 1073 combined a transformer-coupled mic preamp with a three-band EQ and high-pass filter, and it became the most copied channel design in recording. Its weight in the low-mids, the smooth top end of its high shelf and the way it saturates when driven are the core of what engineers call “the Neve sound”.

The 80 series

The 80 series consoles, designed and built from 1968 to 1979, carried this approach into full studio desks, with different module types (1073, 1084, 1081 and others) depending on the model and the customer. Each console was built to order, so no two are exactly alike: channel counts, modules and routing varied from studio to studio. Transformers were a defining component; the modern AMS Neve 8424, for example, still uses Marinair transformers, the type originally designed for the early 80 series.

The Sound City 8028

Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, installed a Neve 8028 in the early 1970s. Over the following decades it was used on a long list of rock records, the most famous being Nirvana’s Nevermind (1991). When Sound City stopped operating as a commercial studio in 2011, Dave Grohl bought the console and moved it to his own studio; his 2013 film Sound City told the story of the room and the desk, and helped turn the 8028 into a cultural object as much as a tool.

Why did it matter? For rock recording, the combination of Neve preamps, EQ and transformer-coupled summing adds weight and cohesion to drums, bass and guitars recorded live in a room — exactly the sound that Sound City’s large live room was built for.

After the 80 series

Neve moved on to larger, automated consoles in the late 1970s and 1980s, including the V series and the VR — see our Neve VR history. Rupert Neve had left the company by then. In the early 1990s the business became AMS Neve, which today builds the large-format 88RS, the Genesys and Genesys Black hybrids, and the compact 8424, explicitly based on the 80-series sound with Marinair transformers and a voltage-mixing bus.

The 80-series sound today

AMS Neve: 1073-family modules (rack, 500-series and the 8424 console).

Rupert Neve Designs: Rupert Neve’s own later company, with the 5088 console and preamps that reinterpret his ideas rather than copy the 80 series.

Clones and plug-ins: many manufacturers build 1073-style preamps and EQs; plug-in emulations are ubiquitous.

Vintage 80-series consoles still trade through specialist dealers, usually after significant refurbishment.
