Founded near Oxford in 1969 by Colin Sanders, SSL built the consoles that became the standard of major studios from the late 1970s onwards, and its channel strips, dynamics and bus compressor remain reference points for engineers today. SSL is now part of the Audiotonix group, alongside Allen & Heath, DiGiCo and Calrec. This guide walks through the SSL console lineage and the current range, from a buyer’s point of view.

The SSL lineage in five steps

Console

Year

Why it matters

SL 4000 B

1976

In-line layout plus on-board computer automation; six built

SL 4000 E

1979

Dynamics on every channel, master bus compressor; Total Recall in 1981

SL 4000 G

1987

Redesigned EQ; the default major-studio desk into the 2000s

SL 9000 J

1994

SuperAnalogue: wide bandwidth, very low noise and distortion

XL 9000 K

2002

Mature SuperAnalogue flagship with surround capability

For the full story of the 4000, read our SSL 4000 series history; for the SuperAnalogue era, see SSL 9000 J and XL 9000 K; and for a buyer’s comparison of the three generations, SSL E vs G vs J.

What the “SSL sound” really is

The SSL character is built from a few identifiable ingredients. The channel dynamics (compressor/limiter and expander/gate on every channel since the E) are fast and assertive. The EQ comes in several flavours: the early “brown knob” ’02, the “black knob” ‘242 developed in 1983 with George Martin for AIR Studios, and the G-series EQ introduced in 1987. The stereo bus compressor, a VCA design, is the famous “glue” of countless pop mixes — see our bus compressor guide. And from the 9000 J onward, SuperAnalogue circuitry pushed bandwidth and headroom far beyond the 4000, trading some colour for precision.

The current SSL studio range

ORIGIN (32 channels, announced at AES 2019 and shipping from 2020; a 16-channel version followed in 2022): a purely analogue in-line console, SSL’s first new large-format analogue console in over a decade. It uses PureDrive mic preamps (clean “Pure” or saturated “Drive” modes), the E-series ‘242 EQ, 16 buses and the classic bus compressor. Its launch price was $49,999 for the 32-channel version.

Duality Fuse: the SuperAnalogue large-format flagship, combining Duality’s console and DAW-control capabilities with the analogue colour stages of SSL’s Fusion processor.

AWS 948 δelta: a smaller-format hybrid console that combines an SSL analogue mixer with DAW control and plug-in-based automation of analogue parameters.

Matrix² and Sigma δelta: analogue summing and DAW-control solutions for hybrid rooms.

BiG SiX and SiX: desktop SuperAnalogue mixers that bring SSL channel processing and bus compression to project studios; BiG SiX offers 18 channels of summing at mixdown.

Alongside the studio range, SSL builds digital consoles for broadcast (System T) and live sound (the SSL Live family, from the compact L100 and L200 to the flagship L650). Our reviews of the arena touring consoles place SSL Live against DiGiCo and Yamaha.

How to choose

A commercial tracking and mixing room wanting a true large-format analogue workflow will look at ORIGIN first: it is the most direct modern descendant of the 4000, at a fraction of the price of a vintage restoration project. A hybrid production room where the DAW is the centre will find Duality Fuse or AWS δelta more relevant, because they control the DAW as well as the analogue path. A project studio that wants SSL summing and bus compression without a large console will be well served by BiG SiX or SiX. And a vintage 4000 E or G remains an option for studios with a technician on hand — see our guide to buying a vintage console before committing.

SSL versus the alternatives

SSL’s closest rivals in the analogue studio are AMS Neve (88RS, Genesys, 8424) and API (Vision, Legacy AXS, 2448, 1608-II). In broad strokes, SSL is heard as the most controlled and punchy, Neve as the richest and most transformer-coloured, and API as the most forward and aggressive in the midrange. Our SSL vs Neve comparison and the three-way SSL vs Neve vs API go into detail.

For the broader context on professional mixing consoles, return to our professional mixing console 2026 expert guide.

Le Fader Rating — SSL consoles

Rated with our Le Fader rating method (audio quality 30% · workflow 25% · connectivity 15% · value for money 20% · reliability 10%).
