The XLR cable is the artery of any pro audio system: it links microphones, DI boxes and the console. A good cable prevents hiss, interference and dropouts. Here’s how to choose.

Build quality

Analog or digital cable: don’t mix them up
An XLR mic cable carries an analog, balanced signal. For digital AES/EBU audio (between certain devices or stageboxes), the standard calls for 110Ω impedance: an ordinary mic cable (around 45–75Ω) may work over short runs but causes reflections and data errors over long ones. For reliable AES/EBU, use an XLR cable rated at 110Ω — visually identical, electrically different.
Star-quad cable: when is it worth it?
Star-quad replaces the usual two conductors with four, wired as opposing pairs. The result is even better noise rejection than standard shielding — valuable near lighting dimmers, switching power supplies or RF transmitters. The trade-off is a slightly stiffer, heavier cable. For sensitive mic runs (vocals, low-level sources) and long distances on stage it’s a real gain; for short patch runs at the console the benefit is negligible.
Copper, gauge and flexibility
Favour an OFC (oxygen-free copper) conductor: better conductivity and longer life than cheap alloys. On gauge, 24 AWG suits everyday use; step up to 22 AWG for long distances. A flexible jacket (quality PVC or rubber) that doesn’t hold kinks makes coiling easier and spares the conductors from fatigue.
Labelling, coiling and care
In the field, the cable that lasts is the one that’s treated well: coil it over-under (one loop one way, the next reversed) to avoid permanent twists, label each length (coloured heat-shrink, numbers) and store it loosely. A simple continuity tester spots a broken conductor or a tired solder joint in seconds, before it fails mid-session. A cable that crackles when you flex it is due for a re-solder or retirement.

Does a pricier XLR cable sound better?
On a proper connection, two well-made cables sound identical: « better » is about reliability (connectors, shielding, durability), not an audible coloration. Invest in ruggedness, not supposed « premium » sound.
Is star-quad worth the extra cost?
Yes in RF-heavy environments or for long mic runs; no for short patch runs, where standard shielding is plenty.
Can I use a mic cable for AES/EBU?
As a stopgap over a few metres, maybe. For a reliable install, use a dedicated 110Ω digital cable: long mic-cable runs generate errors.
Male or female: which way round?
Signal flows from the output (male XLR) to the input (female XLR): at the mic, the cable’s female end connects to the mic, the male end goes to the console input. Keep the direction consistent for a readable patch.
