DiGiCo SD12 Review: The Multi-Application DiGiCo Explained

DiGiCo calls the SD12 its “go-to multi-application console”, and it is one of the most common mid-size DiGiCo desks on tours, in venues and in rental stock. It packs the SD-range workflow into a frame roughly 1.1 metres wide. This review is based on DiGiCo’s published specifications and on the console’s position in the current range.

Strengths

Busses that stay available. The 36 busses can be used as auxes or groups, and the 12 × 8 matrix comes on top of them, so building matrix feeds does not eat into your aux count.

Processing on every path. Channel processing is the same on all inputs and outputs, with large pools of dynamic EQ, multiband compression and DiGiTuBes that can be assigned wherever they are needed.

Connectivity. Dual MADI, AES and DMI slots let the SD12 join DiGiCo SD-Rack systems, Dante networks (for example with the DMI-DANTE64@96 card, 64 × 64 at 48 or 96 kHz) or Waves SoundGrid (DMI-WAVES card).

Rider acceptance. DiGiCo consoles are widely requested on riders, and the SD12 is a common compromise when a full-size desk will not fit.

Limits

  • 72 channels is enough for most tours and venues, but large productions will look at the Quantum range — see our Quantum 338 review.
  • Price and ecosystem: a full system with stage racks and DMI cards is a significant investment; check current dealer pricing.
  • Learning curve: DiGiCo’s workflow is powerful but different from Yamaha or Allen & Heath habits.

How it compares

Against the Quantum 338, the SD12 has fewer channels (72 against 128), fewer busses and two screens instead of three, but it is lighter (42 kg against 70 kg) and more compact. Against the Yamaha DM7 or Allen & Heath dLive, the choice is often about rider requirements and existing I/O. Our DiGiCo Quantum and SD series guide, DiGiCo S-Series review and DiGiCo vs Avid comparison give the wider picture.
